Managing absence can be time consuming but the impact of staff absence is costly and can damage educational provision. Here are our ten top tips for managing staff absence:
- Ensure you have an absence policy in place which is up-to-date and in line with current legislation and best practice
- Your policy should include trigger points and clearly set out how absence will be monitored and managed
- The Headteacher or a senior member of staff should receive calls from employees when they first report in sick – this instantly reduces absence levels
- Remind teaching staff they are required to leave short-term cover work for supply/support staff use
- Refer staff to Occupational Health where appropriate for advice, guidance and support
- Prepare for trigger meetings and ensure your data is accurate and up to date
- Be consistent when scheduling trigger meetings, don’t remove employees from the process as this could be deemed as discriminatory practice
- Make reasonable adjustments where possible and provide feedback to employees if adjustments cannot be made
- Support staff to return to work through phased returns, stress action plans or rehabilitation programmes where appropriate
- Before dismissing an employee for either short or long term absence, ensure alternatives are considered such as a reduction in hours, role adjustments or alternative roles.
