Improving staff retention by managing absence and wellbeing

Recent research found that the number of teachers on long-term sick had risen by 5% over the last year. The research was based on data requested from 82 English councils and showed that 1.3 million days were logged as absent from school, due to stress and mental health over the last four years*. As it has often been referred to, many people believe that heavy workloads, budget cuts and recruitment difficulties have all added to workplace pressure and increased levels of stress. Absence in education (public sector) remains at a higher rate than the private sector as stated in the 2018 CIPD Health and Wellbeing Report.
