Duchess of Cambridge launches pilot mental health website to help primary schools support pupils
Mental health in schools,
Discussing mental health,
absence management in schools,
It has been mentioned in the press a lot recently that there are so many children suffering with mental health issues at a young age. In light of this, the Duchess of Cambridge has launched a new website, funded by the Royal Foundation.
‘Mentally Healthy Schools’ is a free website designed to raise awareness of child mental health issues and provide resources for primary schools to use. Fifteen hundred resources have been created to be specifically appropriate for primary school age children. The content centres around four main areas – teaching resources, risks and protective factors, mental health needs, and a whole school approach for school leaders.
The project has been co-ordinated and financed by the Royal Foundation but developed in conjunction with youth-focused charity partners of Heads Together; the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, Place2Be and Young Minds. The NAHT were also engaged at the start of the project and content has been provided by the Centre for Mental Health.
The Duchess said in a speech to launch the portal: “I see time and time again that there is so much to be gained from talking of mental health and taking the mental health of our children as seriously as we do their physical health”.
“When we intervene early in life, we help avoid problems that are much more challenging to address in adulthood”.
“Teachers want to help, but don’t have the time to go hunting for the best information and advice out there. You need resources you can trust. And you need to have easy access to them at all times. That is what this pilot is all about”.
The pilot will cover 50 schools before being rolled out in Spring. If you would like to receive a notification when the site is launched, you can request details on the website https://mhscms.addison-group.net/site-lock/.
